Skin Types
One question that we will all have asked ourselves at some point or another is, what is our skin type? It seems like a simple enough question but is actually not that easy to answer, and this is because most of us have a combination of different skin types, and most of us have a skin type that changes with things like hormone fluctuations, and our age. At Nakin we believe that skincare should be simple, so here’s an easy way to work out your own personal skin type. Although you are likely to be a mix of different skin types we can look for the predominant one that we have. The good news is that whatever your skin type the face products in our natural anti-ageing skincare range are designed to work with all skin types, as they contain such high quality plant ingredients.
Many of us do not know our own skin type, and it is important to understand this as it means we can use the right products for our skin. There are five different skin types as listed here, and this article discusses how to workout your skin type and choose skincare products accordingly.
- Normal Skin Types have the right balance of oil where skin on the face feels comfortable most of the time
- Oily Skin Types can have a shiny look on the face, with open pores and is prone to breakouts
- Dry Skin Types have skin on the face that sometimes feels tight, and can be dull and flaky
- Combination Skin Types tend to have an oily T-Zone on the face and dry cheeks
- Sensitive Skin Types have skin that can be itchy, red and irritated
How to Discover Your Skin Type
It’s best to work out your own skin type at home, as getting to know your own skin helps to pick the right skincare products, and also to notice changes to your skin and pick your skincare accordingly. To work out your skin type category then follow the steps below.
There can be lots of confusion about skin types, in fact when researching this article we read somewhere that there are 16 different skin types. There is no need to make skin types confusing, as there are essentially five main different skin types. It keeps it simple to work with these categories. Yes, they can overlap to an extent, but the most important element is to work out your main skin type. Then secondary factors can be considered once this is established. Managing and caring for your main skin type is the most important factor in having healthy, comfortable, clear and happy skin. We want you to take your skin to a better place, and alleviate any existing concerns.
“Remember That No-One Knows Your Skin Better Than You Do”
To diagnose your personal skin type start in the evening by cleansing skin with a gentle natural cleansing milk like our Nakin Advanced Cleansing Milk or a natural face wash like our Rejuvenating Face Wash, this will clean skin beautifully but without upsetting it, so skin will be soft and fresh. Once the skin is cleansed do not apply any additional product afterwards, just for this night miss out eye cream, serum, oil and moisturiser. Take care also to sleep in a room without any artificial systems such as air conditioning or a lot of central heating.
When you wake up in the morning the first thing to do is touch your skin in the central zone, which is your forehead, nose and chin and commonly known as the T-Zone. Assess whether this area is looking and feeling oily, dry or sensitive.
If the T-Zone is very oily then you have an oily skin, if it is just slightly oily and the cheeks are drier then this is a combination skin type. If it is on the dry side, dull or flaking then your skin is a dry skin type. If it is not too oily or dry, then this is a normal skin type. If it is irritated in any way, then your skin type is sensitive. It really is as simple as that. After this first assessment then double check the results by looking in a mirror at your pores and the colour of your skin. If your pores are wide open and the skin looks a little darker and tired, then this is another sign of an oily skin type. If your skin feels a bit tight, is dull and dehydrated then this is a dry skin type. If the skin looks well rested, nice and smooth and content then that is another sign of a normal skin type. If your skin is sensitive then it is likely to be red, irritated, tight or itchy. You can further test sensitive skin by splashing the face with water, and if it leaves skin feeling delicate and vulnerable this is another sign. Most people with sensitive skin types will already know this, as they will not be able to use lots of skin products or make-up products as they may cause a tingling, sensitivity or irritation.
We know that many of our customers have more than one requirement when it comes to their skin type. They may have a dry skin type, but also be sensitive. So, this needs to be taken into account when purchasing skincare products. In this scenario the face product would need to be suitable for drier skin types, as well as sensitive skin. Nakin's range of face products is perfect for this as everything is made with sensitive skin in mind.
Your age will also determine the products that you purchase as if you have very young skin then it will only require minimal products, although skin ageing prevention is still important. At Nakin our natural skin care is formulated for all skin types and ages, including sensitive skin. This is because it uses the finest skin loving plant actives and oils that are not too rich or drying, just glow enhancing. The only products in our range that are skin type dependent are our face creams, we have our natural face cream for dry skin types, and our natural face cream for oily skin types.
Once you have worked out your skin type, for extra confidence in your decision you could always visit a skincare counter and ask for their advice and assessment. But remember that no-one knows your skin better than you do.
After you have determined your skin type, it’s important to remember that this is not set in stone for life. It can change depending on the seasons, age, heating, air conditioning, stress and other health issues. Environmental factors are likely to only cause a temporary change to skin type, but other factors such as age or health may cause a change to your overall skin type. So, remember to assess your skin type every year.
Choosing Skincare For Your Skin Type
Now that you know your skin type, the next step is to work out the right skincare products for you. At Nakin we only recommend using natural skincare products, so we will only focus on advice and recommendations on natural skincare, like our own Nakin range of products. A lot of conventional skincare contains chemical ingredients such as Silicones, PEGS, Retinol and Glycolic Acid and we do not recommend them for any skin type. This is because they are harsh to skin and can cause clogging or sensitivity. Natural ingredients will almost always be kinder to skin and help it to flourish. The science behind natural skincare has advanced so much in the last few decades, so much so that the same results can be achieved to get skin smooth and glowing, but without the harsh synthetic chemical ingredients. That’s why at Nakin we developed stunning anti-ageing skincare products using the best ingredients that nature has to offer, such as smoothing Hibiscus Extract to ease lines, plumping Hyaluronic Acid to put bounce into skin and conditioning Seaweed Extract to fill skin with powerful nutrients. These ingredients also work beautifully with every skin type whether oily, dry, sensitive or normal.
For every skin type, the important thing is to always follow your skin regime daily; and in both the morning and night for best results. The essential three step cleansing, toning and moisturising is still the basic regime for good clear nourished skin. Use face products that are especially developed for your skin type, or a natural one for all skin types such as the Nakin Skincare range. Nakin Skincare includes everything you need for a complete face care regime and contains oils and ingredients for every skin type, including sensitive skin. This is because you can have any skin type, be it oily, dry, normal and combination skin, but also be a sensitive skin type as well. Most of us will experience some skin sensitivity at some point, and it becomes more common as we age. Stressed skin is one of the factors that contribute to the signs of skin ageing. Nakin’s range works wonders as sensitive skincare products due to the formulations of the finest natural active ingredients, that enhance and boost skin, but without irritating it. Try the following routine for healthy, nourished and glowing skin.

If you are one of the lucky ones with a normal skin type, then the only thing to ensure is that you use skincare with ingredients that is natural, not too oily, or not too drying. It’s an easy skin type as instead of trying to deal with the skin concerns of some skin types, normal skin types can just focus on general skin requirements like anti-ageing and getting the best glowing healthy skin. Oily skin types will benefit from a double cleanse, using small amounts of face cream, serum, oil and eye cream, and ensuring that skincare does not contain any fatty pore clogging oils like Coconut Oil. Dry skin types should take care to ensure they get enough moisture and nutrients to prevent lines, and early skin ageing. Those with dry skin have the benefit of being able to use lots of products like moisturiser, serum and oil and layer them up to deliver many vitamins, minerals and conditioning extracts. Exfoliating regularly will keep flaking skin at bay and means that skin can better absorb the skincare applied. Those with combination skin should look to see if it is oilier, or dry and adapt the routine accordingly. Carry out gentle double cleansing and exfoliating as this is good for all skin types, and then on the oily areas use less product than on the dry areas. For sensitive skin types the best thing to do is to be really kind to it. Only use natural skincare, and cleanse with a comforting cleansing milk followed by a calming face cream and treatments. A face oil can work wonders on sensitive skincare to calm, hydrate and boost skin.
