What is an AHA in Skincare?

What is an AHA in Skincare?

There is no doubt that skincare is getting more and more scientifically advanced, with the use of active ingredients that can do wonders for skin. The ingredients often have quite high-tech names which can add to the confusion and understanding of what they actually are. One of these ingredients is AHA’s which we use in our Nakin Natural Anti-Ageing Skincare. The type of AHAs that we use at Nakin are 100% natural and derived from fruit extracts, and this means that you get all the power of an AHA but without the irritation that synthetic AHA’s can cause.

AHAs or Alpha Hydroxy Acids are a group of chemical compounds that are commonly used in skincare products. They have become very popular in recent years due to their numerous benefits for the skin. At Nakin we mostly use them in our Exfoliating Radiance Tonic as AHAs are excellent chemical exfoliators. They are a much more modern type of exfoliator which work without the need for scrubbing the skin with rough materials, which can be damaging to skin by causing micro tears. We also use a small amount in our Rejuvenating Face Wash. AHAs in skincare can have powerful anti-ageing properties on skin, and we especially believe in the natural fruit versions that we use, as they are kind to skin.

What are AHAs in Skincare?

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are naturally occurring acids found in fruits, milk and sugarcane. They are also produced synthetically for use in many skincare products. Commonly used synthetic AHAs in skincare products are glycolic acid and malic acid, although they can be too much for sensitive skin.

How do they work?

Whether the AHA is natural like ours, or synthetic, AHAs work by exfoliating the top layer of the skin, removing dead skin cells, and revealing brighter, smoother, and more even-toned skin. They also have the ability to penetrate deeper into the skin, promoting collagen production and improving skin elasticity.

Benefits of AHAs in Skincare

Exfoliation: As mentioned before, AHAs are excellent exfoliators which can improve the texture and appearance of the skin. Regular use of AHA products can help reduce fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots.

Hydration: AHAs are also known to attract moisture to the skin, making them great for dry and dehydrated skin. They can help improve the skin's barrier function, keeping it hydrated and plump.

Anti-Ageing: By promoting collagen production, AHAs can help reduce signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. They can also improve the overall appearance of the skin, making it look more youthful and radiant.

Brightening: AHAs are excellent for improving skin tone and reducing the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. They can also help even out skin texture, giving it a smoother and brighter appearance.

How to Use AHAs in Skincare

We recommend incorporating AHAs into your skin care routine with our Nakin Exfoliating Tonic, or Rejuvenating Face Wash. They are exceptional facial cleansers and the powerful fruit AHAs play a big part in this. At Nakin all of our products are designed to offer excellent natural anti-ageing benefits, and you can find our full range of face products here.
